Walk into almost any shop or workshop in Iraq and you’ll find a system that works better than outsiders expect: orders on WhatsApp, debts in a notebook by the till, stamped receipts photographed and forwarded.
That system holds together, until it doesn’t: a payment nobody recorded, a customer who calls five times for an update, a report assembled by hand at midnight.
Hemlo started from a simple decision: don’t build software for Iraq from a distance. Sit in the shop, read the notebook, then build only the part that needs software, and make it simple enough for a busy day and a weak signal.
